Our club has agreed to host an evening of soccer for the participating kids of the Ulster Project. Our city has played host for one of the numerous groups of kids from Ireland for many years, and Lakeview Soccer Club has been a part of those visits often. “The Mission of the Ulster Project: is working for real peace in Northern Ireland by building increasing community among all the diverse participants from both Northern Ireland and the United States, especially Castlederg and New Orleans area. There are still issues arising from conflict and division in Northern Ireland, especially among young people. There has been an increase in overt conflict. But the most troubling and long-lasting effects are subtle, and silent. A shared and better future can only have a chance to grow if it is fed by consistent actions, leadership and commitment by all. The need for the mission of the Ulster Project continues to be evident to the people closest to the situation in Northern Ireland. The Ulster Project provides the opportunity for young people and their families to interact in a neutral setting, to work together to achieve a goal-a-trip to the New Orleans area, and actually live with and interact with other teens and families who live in peaceful co-existence. Participants in the Ulster Project have already shown themselves to be positive-thinking and willing to break free from stereotypes. Hopefully, these teen leaders will grow into adult leaders who will lead Northern Ireland into a more tolerable, peaceful future.”1 Our club will host a soccer night at the Marconi Fields from 6:00-9:00 PM on July 14th (I hear soccer/football is big there). The format will be a soccer game among the Irish visitors and their New Orleanian hosts (each Irish visitor has a New Orleans host who commits one entire month to the project). Hubie has agreed to officiate at this game. My firm, Planning Associates will provide the initial sponsorship of the event and will contribute $100.00 to underwrite the food and drinks. We will cook hamburgers, and hot dogs, and provide drinks. I hope to raise some additional donations from our team parents who might like to help. If everyone contributed just $5.00 we would have over $700.00 to provide better food, drinks and also give a LSC t-shirt to commemorate the event for these kids. However it doesn’t have to be money, if you know of someone that can contribute in kind donations. In addition, if any of our kids still need service hours (Angie Wulff’s idea, thanks Angie), this is a great way to earn 3-5 hours in a fun and internationally impactful way. If for no other reason, we will have a number of kids that have a stronger accent than Hubie (our Americanized Director…accents fade fast in the US). Our current board has graciously offered their time and support to this program. We hope our membership will lend a hand as well. If you would like to contribute or participate in any way, please call me at (504) 539-7171. If I am not available, please ask for Kara, my business manager, and the club’s bookkeeper. If neither are available, just leave a message and we will get back with you at our earliest opportunity. Thanks for your interest and assistance in this project. Ralph C. Freibert, III Club Treasurer
