Lakeview’s Lightning ‘92 Girls won the U17G Premier Division of the John Talley Showcase in Memphis, March 28-29. They defeated Evansville (Indiana) Elite in the title match Sunday afternoon on a firm, green field under sunny skies, after an otherwise cold, cloudy, and muddy weekend.
Just 10 minutes into the Final, Cristina Keiffer took a throw-in from Ellie Quinn and slashed a left-footer into the back of the net to give Lakeview a 1-0 lead. Quinn doubled the lead 11 minutes later. She took a pass from Jessica Merkel and rippled the back netting from almost the same spot as Keiffer. Evansville, who led the U17G Premier Division in scoring with 11 goals, fought back and closed to 2-1 with a late score off a scramble in front of goal, but Lakeview held them off in the final exciting minutes to take the trophy and earn a happy ride home.
Sunday morning Lakeview had faced area rivals Gulf Coast United in a must-win match. Midway through the second half, Nine Horne slipped a free kick under the crossbar from 25 yards out to put Lakeview on top 1-0. Lakeview keeper Emily Cobena saved a penalty kick with only three minutes left to preserve the hard-fought win.
Saturday night, Sarah Bonura scored twice to give Lakeview a 2-0 win over King’s Premier of Kentucky. The win eventually served to break a tie atop Group A and put Lakeview in the Final ahead of King's Prem. Twelve minutes into the match, Bonura headed in a clean pass from Erin Berni. Nine minutes into the second half, Keiffer fought through the defense and fired a shot that the keeper could only deflect to Bonura, who calmly knocked it into the open net from 20 yards. Lakeview’s defense, which gave up two goals all weekend, held the Kentucky side to 3 shots.
Lakeview had to overcome a 0-1 loss to the Ohio Galaxies, coached by popular former Lakeview coach Neil “Scooby” Daniels, in the tournament opener. Ohio scored on their only second-half shot, then withstood 30 minutes of a relentless - but fruitless - Lakeview attack.

Lakeview's Lightning 92 Girls were punished with a 3-0 defeat for starting slowly in Region III-C Premier League match against Arkansas SC Cougars 92G in Alexandria on Sunday, September 28. The aggressive Cougars scored on each of their first 3 shots. Loose marking on a nice cross and volley at the 3-minute mark was followed by errors that led to 2 easy goals and capped the scoring with only 20 minutes gone. Lakeview continued to fight gamely, shutting down and outshooting the Cougars, and controlling most of the possession for the final 70 minutes. But they were unable to break through ASC's defense and overcome the bad start.

September 20,2008

Lakeview's U17G Lightning defeated Gulf Coast United FC 3-1 in a Regional Premier League game on Saturday, September 20, in Hattiesburg. Lakeview's two new Sarahs opened the scoring. Sarah Bonura neatly headed Cristina Keiffer's cross inside the near post just after 30 minutes. Nine minutes later, Sarah Parkerson pounced on a weak clearance and bounced a shot over the GCU keeper's head to send the teams to half time with Lakeview up 2-0 and in control. Lakeview continued its control in the second half.
Steady defending kept GCU's fast attackers in check and put the ball back in Lakeview's attacking end. Lakeview missed several dangerous chances before Nina Horne took goalkeeper Emily Cobena's long punt behind the defense and slipped the ball home to put Lakeview up 3-0 and effectively seal the match. Gulf Coast salvaged a consolation goal in the final seconds. Lakeview is now tied for second in the RPL standings with 1 win and 1 draw, having tied league-leading Jackson FC 0-0 on August 23. Gulf Coast remains tied for 3rd place.
